The multidisciplinary science of environmental toxicology is important in studying the effects of chemical, biological and physical agents on individuals, animals, land, water and air. Environmental toxicologists investigate and provide evidence to understand the biological effect chemical agents have on DNA mutations, linkage to cancers, increases in morbidity and mortality rates. Statistical information collected from the toxicology studies assists with identifying rate and amount of exposure that is detrimental, along with finding agents to counteract effects. Environmental toxicology information is also useful as forensic evidence in criminal or negligent cases, for example exposure to nuclear material from an accident or purposeful criminal act, such as adding arsenic to someone’s food or drinking water.

There is supporting evidence that the ozone layer is deteriorating and that skin cancer rates have increased. Environmental statistical data on air pollution’s effect on man and animal is useful for local, state and federal agencies in creating and enforcing laws related to air pollution. Chemicals and other toxic agents in our water and soil is another area of research with legal implications. Some chemicals in small quantities are added to the soil and water systems to destroy or control harmful bacteria, or to assist in growing crops, but when application procedures are not followed there is a potential for introduction of toxic levels, which could lead to dangerous environmental diseases.
